Feel and firmness

GhostBed Classic: firm, latex-topped, cool

The GhostBed Classic is an 11-inch all-foam mattress, but it doesn't feel like a typical memory-foam bed. The top layer is aerated synthetic latex, which is springy and doesn't trap heat. Under that is a gel memory foam layer, then a dense support core. The net effect is a medium-firm (most testers put it around 6.5–7/10) surface with bounce, minimal sink, and better-than-average cooling for a foam bed.

Back sleepers and stomach sleepers are the sweet spot. Lighter side sleepers often find it too firm to relieve shoulder pressure. GhostBed also sells a Luxe (softer, more cooling tech) and hybrid models if the Classic is too firm.

Casper One: softer and more forgiving

Casper's entry-level bed is a medium (5/10) all-foam mattress with Zoned Support — softer foam under the shoulders, firmer under the hips. It contours more than GhostBed, which is why it's the better side-sleeper option. It sleeps warmer than GhostBed and doesn't have the same bounce.

Purple: the grid

Purple's GelFlex Grid is unlike either foam bed. It buckles under pressure points and stays firm elsewhere, with open channels that make it the coolest-sleeping bed here. Very responsive, very bouncy, slightly polarizing texture. Medium (6/10) overall.

Firmness ranking, softest to firmest: Casper One → Purple → GhostBed Classic.

Cooling: the real differentiator

All three market themselves as cooling. In practice:

  1. Purple is the clear winner. The grid is mostly air. If you overheat at night, this is the one.
  2. GhostBed Classic is a strong second. Aerated latex on top plus gel foam underneath keeps it noticeably cooler than a standard memory-foam bed. It's the best-cooling all-foam option of the three.
  3. Casper One is fine, not special. AirScape perforated foam helps, but it's still a contouring foam bed that holds some heat.

If cooling is your top priority and the Purple price is too high, GhostBed is the smart compromise.

Frequently asked questions

Is GhostBed better than Casper?

It depends on how you sleep. GhostBed Classic is firmer, cooler, cheaper on sale, and has a longer warranty — better for back and stomach sleepers. Casper One is softer and more contouring — better for side sleepers. Neither is objectively better; they suit different people.

Is GhostBed firmer than Purple?

Yes. GhostBed Classic is medium-firm (around 6.5–7/10). Purple is medium (about 6/10) but feels different because the grid collapses under pressure points, so it can feel softer where you need it and firmer elsewhere.

Does GhostBed sleep cool?

Better than most all-foam mattresses. The aerated latex top layer and gel memory foam underneath move heat away more effectively than standard memory foam. It's not as cool as Purple's grid, but it's the best-cooling all-foam bed of these three.

Which has the best warranty?

GhostBed, at 20 years (some GhostBed models advertise 25). Casper and Purple both offer 10 years.

Which is cheapest?

On sale, GhostBed Classic is usually the cheapest — GhostBed runs 25–30% off sitewide most of the year. Casper One is close behind at its frequent sale price. Purple is the most expensive of the three.

Are all three available on Amazon?

Yes. GhostBed Classic, Casper One, and the Purple Mattress are all sold on Amazon. Prices there can differ from the brand sites, and the sleep-trial and warranty terms may differ too — check before you buy.
