What $50 buys — and what it doesn't
Under $50, you're choosing between three constructions:
- Solid memory foam. One molded piece. Consistent support, no lumps, no adjustability. The best cheap option for back sleepers and anyone who wants a firm, predictable shape. Sleeps warm unless gel-infused.
- Shredded memory foam. Adjustable loft by removing fill. The cheap versions use mattress-scrap foam that can feel lumpy or sticky — that's the main thing a $70–$100 shredded pillow fixes. Still, a decent $40 shredded pillow beats a $20 polyester one.
- Down alternative (polyester fiber). Soft, cheap, machine washable, and the fastest to flatten. Fine for stomach sleepers and people who like a squishy pillow. The gusseted 2-packs from Beckham and Utopia are the best of this type.
What you give up versus a $100 pillow: fill quality (new foam vs. scraps), cooling covers, real trials and warranties, and longevity. A good $50 pillow lasts 1–2 years; a Coop or Layla lasts 3–5.
The picks
PureLux Simply Cool — best overall under $50
A single piece of gel-infused memory foam with a medium feel and a cooling-touch cover. It's the rare sub-$50 foam pillow that doesn't trap heat, and because it's solid foam it holds its shape far longer than polyester fill. Medium loft suits back sleepers and most side sleepers. Not adjustable — if you need to fine-tune height, look at Bedsure.
Bedsure Shredded Memory Foam — best cheap adjustable
Shredded foam with a zippered cover so you can remove fill. It's the affordable entry into the adjustable category that Coop dominates. The foam isn't as smooth as Coop's cross-cut fill and you may feel the occasional lump, but for a side sleeper who wants high loft without spending $70+, it's the play.
Beckham Hotel Collection 2-pack — best value
Gel-fiber down alternative in a gusseted cotton cover, two pillows for the price of one budget foam pillow. Plush, hotel-style feel, machine washable. It compresses over 6–12 months like all polyester pillows, but for guest rooms, stomach sleepers, or anyone who likes a soft pillow, the price-per-pillow is unbeatable.
Utopia Bedding Gusseted 2-pack — cheapest that's still fine
Very similar to Beckham at a lower price and slightly less fill. The choice for spare bedrooms and kids' rooms.
Bluewave Bedding Ultra Slim — best for stomach sleepers
A thin (under 3") memory foam pillow designed specifically for stomach sleepers, who need almost no loft to keep the neck neutral. Nothing else at this price is built for that position.
PureLux Simply Cool Pillow
Solid gel memory foam, medium loft, cooling cover. Holds its shape where cheap polyester won't.

If you can stretch to $70–$100
The jump from $50 to $72 buys the Coop Original, and it's the biggest upgrade-per-dollar in pillows. Cross-cut (not shredded) foam that doesn't lump, a 100-night trial, a 5-year warranty, and a fill bag included so you can add loft as well as remove it.
