Under $500 for a queen is genuinely cheap. $500–$800 is budget-friendly from a name brand. Above that you're in mid-range territory — our main mattress guide covers those.
The price floor: where cheap becomes bad
There's a line, and it's around $200 for a queen. Below that you're buying 6-inch foam slabs that bottom out under an adult in a few months, or spring units with a felt pad on top. They exist for guest rooms that see two nights a year, and that's about it.
Between $200 and $400 is the sweet spot for cheap beds that actually work. This is where Amazon's high-volume brands (Zinus, Linenspa, Lucid, Novilla, Sweetnight) live. The foam is thinner and lower-density than a $1,000 bed, so expect 4–6 years of life instead of 8–10 — but the first few years are fine for most people under about 230 lbs.
Signs a cheap bed is too cheap:
- Under 8 inches thick. Not enough material to support an adult without bottoming out.
- No CertiPUR-US certification on the foam. This is the baseline safety and quality standard; any legitimate foam brand has it.
- No trial or a restocking fee on returns. Amazon's return window usually covers you, but check.
- Foam density not listed anywhere. Reputable budget brands publish it. Under 1.5 lb/ft³ in the comfort layer is a durability red flag.
Best cheap beds on Amazon
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam
The best-selling budget mattress in the US for a reason. Green-tea-infused memory foam over a support core, available in 6, 8, 10, and 12-inch heights (get the 10 or 12). Medium feel, decent pressure relief, CertiPUR-US certified, 10-year limited warranty. It's not a luxury bed and it sleeps a bit warm, but at its price nothing else is as consistently good.
Linenspa Hybrid (8" or 10")
A thin comfort layer over a bonnell coil unit. Firmer and bouncier than Zinus, sleeps cooler because the coils breathe, and it's often the cheapest hybrid you can buy. The 8-inch is fine for kids and guest rooms; adults should get the 10-inch. Expect 3–5 years.
Lucid 10" Gel Memory Foam
Very similar to Zinus with a gel-infused top layer that helps with heat. Lucid also sells firm and plush variants, which makes it the pick if you know you want a specific feel. CertiPUR-US certified, 10-year warranty.
Siena Memory Foam
Siena is the budget brand from Resident (the company behind Nectar and DreamCloud). It's a 10-inch all-foam bed at around $400 for a queen with a 180-night trial and 10-year warranty — the trial alone sets it apart from the Amazon-only options. Medium-firm feel; good for back sleepers.
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam
The bestseller for a reason: CertiPUR-US foam, medium feel, 10-year warranty, and a price that's hard to argue with. Get the 10" or 12".
Linenspa 10" Hybrid
Coils plus a thin foam layer. Firmer, bouncier, and cooler than all-foam at the same price.
Lucid 10" Gel Memory Foam
Gel-infused foam in plush, medium, or firm. The pick when you know exactly what feel you want.
Siena Memory Foam
Nectar's budget sibling. 180-night trial and 10-year warranty for around $400 — unheard of at this price.
Best cheap beds from name brands
If you can stretch to $600–$800, you get the things Amazon-only beds don't offer: long sleep trials, lifetime warranties, thicker and denser foams, and a company that will still be around when you have a warranty claim.
Nectar Original
The default answer to "best cheap bed from a real brand." A 12-inch all-foam medium-firm mattress with a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty. It's almost never sold at list price; the real queen price hovers around $650–$700. Pressure relief is strong for the money and motion isolation is excellent.
DreamCloud Classic
Nectar's sister brand, but a hybrid. Pocketed coils under a foam comfort system, taller profile, better edge support and cooling than Nectar. The list price is high but the sale price is often under $1,000 and dips toward $700 on big holidays. If you want coils on a budget, this is the one.
Tuft & Needle Original
A simpler two-layer foam bed with a slightly firmer, more responsive feel than Nectar. 100-night trial, 10-year warranty, and usually $700–$900 for a queen. Good for back and stomach sleepers who find Nectar too soft.
Nectar Original
365-night trial, lifetime warranty, 12" of medium-firm foam. The safest budget pick from a real brand.
DreamCloud Classic
Coils, better edges, better cooling, same 365-night trial. Sale price is the real price.
Don't forget the frame
"Cheap bed" often means bed and frame. Two rules:
- Foam mattresses need a solid or closely-slatted base. Slats more than 3 inches apart let foam sag between them and can void the warranty.
- Skip the box spring. Modern foam and hybrid mattresses don't need one; a platform frame is cheaper and better.
A metal platform frame (Zinus, Olee Sleep, Amazon Basics) runs $80–$150 in queen and does the job. Total for a real, sleepable bed: about $350–$500 all in.

What to realistically expect from a cheap bed
- Lifespan: 4–6 years for a $250–$400 Amazon bed; 7–10 for a $700 name-brand bed. Cheap foam softens and body impressions form faster.
- Off-gassing: Compressed budget foam has a noticeable smell for 1–3 days. Air it out.
- Heat: Budget all-foam beds sleep warm. If you run hot, pick a hybrid (Linenspa, DreamCloud) or look at our cooling mattress guide.
- Edges: Weak on nearly every cheap foam bed. If you sit on the edge to get dressed, a hybrid holds up better.
- Weight: Most budget beds are rated for under ~250 lbs per person. Heavier sleepers need thicker, denser beds and should spend more.
