What actually changes as the price goes up
Every bed here arrives compressed in a box and expands over 24–72 hours. The box isn't what you're paying for. Here's what the money buys at each tier:
- $200–$350: Thinner comfort layers (1–2"), lower-density foam (1.5–2.5 lb/ft³), bonnell coils instead of pocketed coils in hybrids, 10-year limited warranties, Amazon return window instead of a sleep trial. Lifespan 4–6 years.
- $400–$500: Same construction quality as above, plus a real sleep trial (Siena's 180 nights) and a company that services warranties directly.
- $600–$800: Thicker profiles (12"+), denser and more comfort foam (3"+), pocketed coils in hybrids, 365-night trials, lifetime warranties. Lifespan 7–10 years. This is the tier where a budget bed stops feeling like a budget bed.
The biggest single jump in quality-per-dollar is from the $300 tier to the $700 tier. If you can afford it, that's where the value is. If you can't, the $300 tier is still a legitimate mattress.
The cheapest boxed mattress that's still good
Linenspa 10" Hybrid. A quilted foam top over a coil unit, usually $200–$300 for a queen and less on sale. It's firmer than most people expect, which is a feature for back and stomach sleepers and a drawback for side sleepers who need deep pressure relief. The coils keep it cooler than an all-foam bed at the same price.
The trade-offs: bonnell coils (connected, so more motion transfer than pocketed coils), a thin comfort layer, and a 3–5 year realistic lifespan. It's the right bed for a first apartment, a guest room that sees real use, or anyone who needs a mattress this week and can't spend more.
The 8-inch version is $50 cheaper and fine for kids. Adults should get the 10.
Linenspa 10" Hybrid Mattress
Foam over coils at the lowest price that's still a real mattress. Firm-leaning, cool-sleeping, ships fast.
Best under $400
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam, 12". The thickest version of the best-selling budget mattress in the country. Three inches of memory foam over support foam, medium feel, CertiPUR-US certified, 10-year warranty. It's more forgiving than Linenspa for side sleepers and the extra height helps heavier sleepers.
Honorable mention: the Lucid 12" Gel Memory Foam is nearly identical with a gel layer for heat, and Lucid offers firm and plush versions if you have a strong preference.
Zinus Green Tea 12" Memory Foam
The bestselling budget mattress in its thickest configuration. Medium feel, solid pressure relief, 10-year warranty.

Best under $500 with a real sleep trial
Siena Memory Foam. Around $400 for a queen, 10 inches, medium-firm, with a 180-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty. It's made by Resident, the parent of Nectar and DreamCloud, so the foam quality and customer service are a step above Amazon-only brands. This is the cheapest bed-in-a-box we know of that you can try at home for six months and return.
Siena Memory Foam Mattress
Nectar's budget sibling. 180-night trial, 10-year warranty, medium-firm feel. The best safety net at this price.
Best under $800
Nectar Original. This is the bed most people should buy if they can spend $650–$700. 12 inches, medium-firm, three inches of comfort foam, 365-night trial, lifetime warranty. It's a real upgrade over the $300 tier in foam density, pressure relief, and longevity. Nectar's list price is much higher, but it has been on sale essentially forever — the sale price is the price.
DreamCloud Classic is the hybrid alternative from the same company. Pocketed coils, better edges, better cooling, same 365-night trial and lifetime warranty. Its sale price is usually a couple hundred dollars more than Nectar and worth it if you sleep hot or sit on the bed's edge a lot.
Nectar Original
365-night trial, lifetime warranty, 12" of medium-firm foam. The budget bed that doesn't feel like one.
DreamCloud Classic
Pocketed coils, taller profile, better edge support and cooling. Same trial and warranty as Nectar.
Unboxing tips for budget beds
- Give it 48–72 hours before judging the feel. Cheap foam takes longer to fully expand than premium foam.
- Air it out. Off-gassing is stronger on budget foam. A day near an open window mostly clears it.
- Check the height. If a 12" mattress is still 10" after three days, that's a defect — start a return.
- Use the right base. Slats 3" apart or closer, or a solid platform. Wide slats void most warranties.
