Expected life is a realistic estimate for an average-weight sleeper, not the warranty term. Cost per year is price divided by expected life — the number that actually tells you what a bed costs.
The $300 Zinus is the cheapest per year, but the gap between it and the $700 Nectar is only about $20 a year — and Nectar is a much better bed with a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial. That's where the value is for most people.
How we judge value
Sticker price is the least useful number in mattress shopping. What matters:
- Cost per year. A $1,600 bed that lasts 12 years costs about the same per year as a $700 bed that lasts 5. Durability is the hidden variable, and it tracks foam density, coil quality, and materials.
- Trial length and return terms. A 365-night trial with free returns is worth real money — it eliminates the risk of a $1,000 mistake. A 30-day Amazon return window doesn't.
- Warranty that means something. Lifetime warranties from Nectar, DreamCloud, WinkBed, and Saatva actually cover sagging past a threshold. A "10-year limited" warranty on a $250 bed rarely pays out.
- Real sale price, not list. Nectar, DreamCloud, Casper, and Puffy are almost never sold at list. The sale price is the price.
- What you're giving up. Cooling, edge support, and firmness options are the features that separate a $700 bed from a $1,500 one. Whether they matter depends on how you sleep.
Best value around $300: Zinus Green Tea 12"
The cheapest per year of anything we'd recommend. Twelve inches, medium feel, CertiPUR-US foam, 10-year limited warranty, and a review base in the hundreds of thousands. It sleeps warm, the edges are soft, and it'll show body impressions by year four — but at $65 a year, it's the definition of bang for buck.
Who it's for: Solo sleepers under 200 lbs, first apartments, guest rooms, and anyone who'd rather replace a cheap bed in five years than finance an expensive one.
Zinus Green Tea 12" Memory Foam
The cheapest bed we'd recommend, in its thickest configuration. ~$65 per year of use.
Best value around $700: Nectar Original
This is the tier where most people should land. For roughly double the Zinus price, Nectar gives you denser foam that lasts 7–10 years instead of 4–6, a 365-night trial, and a lifetime warranty. Medium-firm, 12 inches, excellent motion isolation, strong pressure relief. It still sleeps a bit warm and the edges are still foam-soft, but the durability and safety net make it the best value on this list for the average buyer.
Runner-up: Tuft & Needle Original, slightly firmer and more responsive, usually $700–$900. Better for back and stomach sleepers who find Nectar too plush.
Nectar Original
365-night trial, lifetime warranty, denser foam that outlasts the $300 tier by years. The value sweet spot.
Best value around $1,000: DreamCloud Classic
DreamCloud's list price is misleading; its real price floats between $700 and $1,000 on sale. For that you get a 12-inch hybrid with pocketed coils, a plush quilted top, meaningfully better edge support and cooling than Nectar, the same 365-night trial, and a lifetime warranty. If you sleep hot or share the bed, the coils are worth the step up from Nectar.
Also strong here: the Casper One on sale (~$850–$950) for side sleepers who want a softer foam feel from a big-name brand.
DreamCloud Classic
Pocketed-coil hybrid with a lifetime warranty at a sale price that often dips under $800. Best cooling and edges in this tier.
Best value around $1,300: WinkBed
WinkBed is the hybrid that reviewers keep rating above average in every category — support, cooling, edge support, motion isolation, durability — without excelling dramatically in any one. That balance is exactly what makes it the value pick at this price. Four firmness options (Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, Plus for heavier sleepers), a 120-night trial, and a lifetime warranty. Expect 10+ years.
WinkBed
Above average in every test category, four firmness options, lifetime warranty. The best all-rounder for the money.
Best value around $1,600: Saatva Classic
At $1,595 for a queen, the Saatva Classic isn't cheap — but on cost per year it's competitive with beds half its price. Dual coil-on-coil construction, three firmness options, a 365-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and free white-glove delivery and old-mattress removal (worth $150–$250 on its own). Realistic lifespan is 12–15 years. If you want to buy one mattress and be done for a decade, this is the value play at the top of the budget range.
Saatva Classic
Coil-on-coil luxury innerspring with free white-glove delivery, three firmness options, and a lifetime warranty. Buy once.
Where value drops off
- Under $200. Mattresses this cheap usually last 1–3 years. Cost per year can end up higher than a $300 bed.
- Boutique foam beds at $1,500+. Paying $1,500 for an all-foam mattress rarely makes sense when a hybrid at that price (WinkBed, Saatva) will outlast it by years.

- Extended warranties and protection plans sold at checkout. The manufacturer warranty already covers defects; these plans mostly cover stains, which a $30 protector handles.
